Honoring the 278th ACR...

The Blue Raiders are proud to be taking some extra steps this week to honor a very special group of people, Tennessee's 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

As part of the 28th annual Salute to Armed Services/Veterans event this Saturday, the Middle Tennessee football team will wear the unit's insignia on its helmet to honor the Tennessee-based 278th Armored Calvary Regiment. The team will keep the insignia on their helmets until the regiment comes home from Iraq, which is expected to be in January 2011.

"We just want to show respect for the men and women who are protecting our country," said Head Coach Rick Stockstill. "This is a way to honor the entire mid-state and I hope everyone comes out Saturday to show their support."

The 278th is comprised of about 4,000 Tennesseans and is Tennessee's largest National Guard unit; the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment is headquartered in Knoxville.

"It is an unbelievable honor for Middle Tennessee to recognize the 278th ACR during this special day honoring all veterans," said Col. Jeff Holmes, MTSU Alumni and Commander of the 278th. "It is this kind of simple gesture that inspires our soldiers to serve this great country and make them proud to be Tennesseans. Words cannot express our gratitude."

Also part of the event, the Parachute Demonstration Team "Screaming Eagles", 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell, KY, will parachute in the game ball.

"This is a sign of our appreciation for all the men and women who are serving our country. We owe them all the support we can provide," said Assistant AD for Marketing and Promotions, Brad Smith.

All Veterans, active military and families will receive complimentary tickets to the game which can be picked up at the pre game picnic located on the grounds of the Kennon Sports Hall of Fame. Tickets are on a first come, first serve basis.
